Brian and I found this place while lurking through the Weird NJ site. For one road, it has a lot of awesome stuff going for it. The Iceman hid one of his victims here in the 80’s, a ghost boy haunts a bridge, Satan worshippers have ceremonies in the woods, and a phantom pickup chases you late at night. It was only a 30 minute drive, so we headed that way. We got there in the late afternoon, before the sun went down. Our first stop was Dead Man’s Curve which is a sharp turn on the road where car crashes are known to happen. That is also the location of a bridge that the boy apparently haunts. ”They” say that if you throw a penny off the bridge, the boy will throw it back up at you. After hurling pennies at the partially frozen river (maybe that’s why it didn’t work), I got aggravated and we moved on. We decided it would be better to come back late at night, so we drove back to Bloomfield and planned on returning around midnight.

Once it got late, we ventured back out that way, arriving shortly after 1 am. This place is much creepier at night. It’s about a 10 mile stretch of windy road surrounded by dense woods. No light leaks in whatsoever. We crept down the paved way hoping that the phantom pickup would appear like in The Most Terrifying Places In America segment, but no such luck. It turned out to be a huge letdown, but I plan on going back. I don’t think there’s a real phantom truck, but from all the accounts, I’m hoping there are people that go there just to scare visitors and keep the legend alive. I have no problem being chased by a real pickup truck being driven by someone who wants to prove a point. That’s just as scary.
